Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe

After apple picking last weekend we had so many apples to use up and I knew I wanted to make a homemade apple crisp – my favorite dessert with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, yum! In all honesty I totally winged this but I love that this is such a rustic dish that it doesn’t really matter. The more the merrier on these ingredients if you know what I mean!

Depending on the size baking dish you’re using and how many people you are serving, this can be as big or small as you’d like. We used a smaller dish – 11 x 8 and 2.5″ deep so my measurements are based on that! I loosely followed this recipe if you’re looking for something to guide you but I swapped the sugar for Truvia and added brown sugar to the apples, too.

Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe

Ingredients:

For the filling:
4 apples, peeled and cubed
juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup Truvia or sugar
1 tbsp light brown sugar
2 tbsp flour
1-2 tsp cinnamon

For the topping:
1 cup rolled oats or quick oats (we only had quick oats!)
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1-2 tsp cinnamon
a pinch of salt
8 tbsp chilled butter, cut into small cubes

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat the bottom of your baking dish with butter/buttery spray. Mix all of the filling ingredients in a bowl and layer at the bottom of your baking dish.

For the topping, combine all dry ingredients. Add the butter and massage together until all combines together and butter is in pea form/small clumps. Sprinkle over the top of the apples and bake for 45 minutes or until brown and bubbly! Serve with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce if you’re really feeling it!

Serve hot and enjoy!
