You know the quote “you either run the day or the day runs you?” I’ve been thinking a lot about the choices we have when we wake up in the morning and how we decide to tackle the day ahead. To be honest, most days I wake up really tired. My kids haven’t been sleeping well lately, everyone has a cough, the air in our house is dry and it’s hard to find a minute to myself. I’m usually behind from the previous day and it sometimes feels like every hour just rolls into one long continuous day that never ends. Ha! It sounds defeating when you say it that way. However, I wake up and I press go and I roll with it.

I’ve always kind of been the person who decides to seize the day. I’m a true morning person—if I wake up past 7am I feel like I’ve already missed a big chunk of my day (even on weekends). I’d also like to think that I try to be optimistic regardless of however I may actually feel. Mind over matter sometimes, you know?

Regardless of the type of person that you are, I find that if I do three specific things in the morning I can usually set my day up for success. Ultimately—whether you’re a mom, you have a demanding job or just genuinely feel like you don’t dedicate enough time for yourself—then these tips may help you! I know that if I don’t take a second for myself at the beginning of the day I’m going have some sort of resentment towards whatever task is at hand. It’s all about balance and we all deserve to tackle the day like a B.O.S.S.

3 Ways to Start Your Day on the Right Foot

  1. Meditation. Ok, I know this may sound intimidating or weird to some of you but I promise it works. And it doesn’t have to be you sitting in a dark room with your legs crossed, calming music playing and chanting OMMM. My biggest recommendation is that you download the HeadSpace app and start small. This takes 10-15 minutes and I promise you will open your eyes with a clearer picture of how your day is going to go. It just basically sets your mind straight for the day and is worth it
  2. Do something productive. This could be as little as making the bed, starting a load of laundry, making a to-do list (or grocery list!) or putting the dishes away but I find that if I’m productive first thing then it dominos down to the rest of my day.
  3. Go outside. Even if you don’t have a dog—walk yourself around the block. Pour a coffee, leave your phone at home and just get some good breaths of fresh air. If you have a baby, strap them to your chest and zip them into your coat. It’s so easy to make excuses for why you are still on the couch at 9am watching the Today show. Go! Start your day by leaving your house and I promise you will get more shit done in the next 12 hours than you thought! (Even if this means you take the garbage out—just take a moment outside).

Sounds simple, right? Obviously this is what works for me but it guarantees that I have a more focused, productive and enjoyable day. Hopefully it helps you, too!

  1. Thank you Liz!! These are great tips!! I’ve just started my own business with Arbonne, and I DEFINITELY need more organization in my life and to just start the day off on the right foot. These are great tips!! 🤗❤️

  2. I try to remember to think of three different things that I’m grateful for each day. This always makes my day a little better and sets the tone for the day ☺️

  3. Great tips, Liz! I always try and do something productive as soon as I wake – it gets me in such a good mood! Love your outfit as well! 🙂 ❤️

  4. I also start the day with meditation. Not sure that I feel a big difference but it feels good to know I’m doing something for me each morning!

    1. Just today I saw something about your own self care language. What helps one doesn’t always help another! Some like meditation, or yoga, or physical activity. Others prefer journaling or reading. Others like physical touch such as massage. Do what makes you feel great for your self care!

  5. This is wonderful, and I really love #3. I currently live in Charleston, and my neighborhood has a beautiful pond. I always look wistfully at it through the window in the mornings, wishing I could walk around it leisurely (especially in the hotter months when the temperatures are glorious early in the morning!) I think this is now more doable as my infant is older, and I’d like to make it a habit since I’m only here for a few more months! Also, if headspace is too expensive for some, I really like the Calm app.

  6. Not sure if you see comments on old posts, but I wanted to thank you for this one! I was reading through your archives, and this one has helped me a lot! I downloaded the CALM app and now meditate every morning and it has made a HUGE difference in my day. Thank you!
