10 Random Things About Me

I get so many questions every week for our Coffee with Liz series and sometimes I’ll get an email from a reader asking a random, fun, personal question. I’ve thrown a few in here and there but today I thought I’d share 10 random things about me!

  1. I am the oldest of three siblings. My sister is 28, lives in the West Loop (but just bought a house near us in the suburbs!) and is finishing nursing school and my brother is 24 and lives in Kansas where he works for The Land Institute. They are my best friends! You can see photos of them from our wedding here and you’ve probably seen them on my instagram (here is a photo of my whole family)!
  2. Favorite movies/tv shows. My favorite movies: Big Fish, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Sound of Music and Romeo & Juliet to name a few! My favorite tv shows: Friends and Parks & Rec are two that I could watch on repeat, I loved Breaking Bad and I’m slowly making my way through random Netflix series. Most days though I watch NBC news, the Food Network or HGTV.
  3. One of my biggest insecurities was always that I talk out of the side of my mouth. I always thought half of my lip was paralyzed or something (haha) and Dave calls it my dead lip. It actually appears to be getting more drastic as I get older. Last year I was with my cousin and we realized that she has it too and she said it was something my grandfather had (my dad’s dad who died 6 months before I was born). It made me happy that I carry on a small characteristic of him. I’m learning to get over it!
  4. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Textiles. I was a clothing buyer for three years before starting my blog.
  5. Dave went to Michigan State with my best friend from high school (we were roommates after college) and we were introduced when Dave moved to Chicago. We’ve pretty much been together ever since!
  6. In my next life I want to own a coffee shop/bakery. I have always been a morning person and I love the idea of starting people’s day off in a positive way – even if it is just a hot cup of coffee and a buttery croissant (that would make me happy!). I’d also like it to have a corner where people could shop some pretty stationary and pick up a bouquet of flowers. I always a appreciate a well designed brand and love the idea of all of my favorite things in one place!
  7. I am a huge homebody. As I’ve gotten older I find myself becoming more of an introvert where I used to be a total extrovert! I say ‘no’ way more often than I should but with two kids, a husband, a business and finding time for myself, it sometimes feels like I am stretched too thin. I savor my nights and I’ve realized the importance of giving myself time to recharge rather than filling up my calendar.
  8. If I could eat one thing for the rest of my life it would probably be a cheeseburger.
  9. If I could move and raise my children anywhere, I think I would move to the English countryside (think The Holiday). I have never been there but it feels like the most quaint, peaceful, calming, safe and picture perfect spot. Dave and I still dream of moving to Charleston one day, too!
  10. When things are quiet on the blog/social media I’m usually doing one of the following: playing play doh with Charlie, putting together a train set, at the library, reading Children’s books, walking Webster, grocery shopping, doing laundry, washing bottles, emptying the dish washer, cleaning our house, preparing meals for Charlie/cooking, building a barn for Charlie’s animals or staring at my babies. That’s my real life! You guys may see pretty photos on my accounts and on the blog but these are the reality of my days. Minus a few loads of laundry, I wouldn’t change it for the world 🙂

Leave something random about yourself in the comments! I love getting to know you all a little better! xoxo

  1. Love that if you could raise your children anywhere it would be the English countryside – that’s where I live with my husband, three year old son and a baby on the way! It is beautiful and safe…but having moved down from London I do miss the buzz of that. I love seeing a glimpse of people’s lives in the States and seeing what your life is like over there. Maybe one day we should do a house swap 😉.

  2. I also went to The Ohio State University, and graduated with a degree in Public Health – marketing and promotion! Always a Buckeye!

  3. Thanks for sharing these fun facts! I have tried to watch Bridget Jones several times and can never get into it for some reason. The talking out of the side of your mouth is so cute and makes you unique. So sweet that you are not alone! One someone asked you that in an insta live and I totally believed Dave when he said a dentist did that to you hahhaa now I feel dumb! I was thinking you got some big settlement out of that or something hahah! Ok randon fact about me….I always use oven mitts even when I put something IN the oven because I just get freaked out about being near the hot inside of the oven.

  4. This is eerily similar to my life. My therapist says ‘these are the most tiring times of your life, just say no to other things.’ I have two under two and find myself relishing in going to bed early and taking a quiet bath rather than over scheduling myself. I feel like we would be mom friends if we lived in the same area. I secretly love not looking my phone – it’s fun to scroll through [insert social platform here], but sitting in the quiet, reading or listening to the podcast makes me so much happier. Thanks for this list and your always awesome content!

  5. Love this post. Do you find people commenting that they feel like you’d be friends if you met in real life? Because this post definitely made me feel this way!
Random fact: I always read magazines from back to to front.

    1. OMG! I also read/flip magazine pages from back to front. So glad I’m not alone. Worked at Vesecky’s Bakery in high school. I am dreaming of owning a bone broth bar.

  6. My husband says I should open up a bakery because I worked at Kirsten’s Danish Bakery in high school and that has been my favorite job ever. I think I would love it! 🙂

  7. My husband and I are foster parents which most people who know us know. What they don’t all know is that we never planned to be foster parents, or even thought about it before saying yes. We were only wanting to adopt but when our instructor told us to add a second crib and foster we jumped at it. In one year we have had 5 kids, and two sets of virtual twins.

  8. I like this game! 🙂 Random fact about me is that I know every word to “American Pie” by Don McLean. I was raised on that song and it makes me happy no matter what mood I’m in.

  9. Liz, loved this post! I am from Kansas and a nurse at a local children’s hospital. My husband is a resident so he is super busy, but get to spend quality time with my pup Millie and my parents. In my free time I like to meet up with girlfriends, do workout classes, and cook/bake!!

  10. You are the cutest…in my next life I want to be you:) I used to LOATHE Sundays…but now Sunday is my absolute favorite day of the week!

  11. Thank you for sharing so much Liz! My husband and I met when we were introduced by his college roommate and my best friend from high school, who were engaged at the time, at a birthday party in Manhattan. I love our story 🙂 Also the oldest of 3, and my sister is absolutely my best friend! Let me know if you open that coffee/bakery shop and need a partner… it’s also a dream of mine!

    Happy Monday!

  12. Long time reader here! Your blog is one of the few I still read! I think I’m a few years older than you, but my husband grew up in West Bloomfield and I feel like he may have crossed paths with Dave at some point! We live in Michigan with our three kids and one time you posted a photo at Franklin Cider Mill and I seriously considered going to meet you (but decided it would seem creepy!). I have become such an INTROVERT the more I get into my 30s. If I could raise my kids anywhere else it would be up north in Empire, Michigan. Its the perfect sleepy beach town with awesome hiking trails. After having two girls and now a boy I have great appreciation for the perfect train track!

  13. Hi Liz! Loved this post! So exciting that your sister bought a house near you guys!!! That is my dream for my siblings and me! Also, I’d definitely have a cheeseburger if I had to pick one meal for the rest of my life 🙂

  14. I just turned 49 (yikes!) on Friday, 2/23, but i will continue turning 29. My mom taught me to crochet when i was five, and am still obsessed. Couldn’t imagine life without it! I’m a zumba addict and a 20 yr old son! Would love to take a one week vacation every month!!
You and your kiddos are adorable!!!

  15. I didn’t realize Dave went to Michigan State. I just figured he went to school in Chicago. Same with you. I studied fashion merchandising at Wayne State University. I didn’t realize Ohio State had a program as well either.

  16. I love that you’re a Buckeye, Liz! I didn’t go to Ohio State, but grew up in Columbus so have always been a Buckeye fan. It drives my husband nuts – he went to Indiana and thinks I can’t be a Buckeye fan since I didn’t go there. I went to Miami of Ohio, then moved to Chicago and spent just over 8 years in the city and we now live in a suburb of Indianapolis with our 18 month old son (who I think could be BFFs with Charlie because he is such a busy boy), crazy yellow lab and are having baby #2 in early May 😊

  17. This was such a cool post. My random fact – my husband is a lawyer who also dreams of opening up a bakery/cafe. He’s even talked about a hybrid concept of law office/cafe and has named it “La Ley Baker-A”… 🙂

  18. #10 was my favorite. I agree with you on the English countryside! My husband is from Hythe in Kent which is called the “Garden of England”. I hope for our little ones (now 2 years and 2 months) we will move back and they can go to school and grow up there!
P.S. – Did you know the house from The Holiday was a prop!!! Went to the town is was filmed in and the locals informed us. It was filmed in the same town as The Wedding Date (my favorite movie of all time)😊

  19. I had no clue you and Dave didn’t meet until after college! You guys remind me of my husband and I so much so I thought you had might even been high school sweethearts like us!
A random fact about myself is I finished college a year and a half yearly because my parent’s said whatever money in tuition I could save them I could put towards my wedding lol. And let me tell you, I was able to pull out all the stops for it haha!

  20. I didn’t know you went to Ohio State! So did I, I grew up in Columbus and moved to Chicago on a whim. I met my husband here when we worked together at the Art Institute of Chicago 🙂

  21. One of the reasons I follow you is because you talk out of the side of your mouth! For reals. I love it! You always seemed so down to earth and fun…definitley someone I would want to be friends with :o)
I am a mom of two boys from San Diego. I homeschool my 7 year old and will start my 5 year old next year with homeschool kindergarten. They are crazy and loud and it’s exhausting raising them, but I’m loving it and already sad thinking I only have 11 more years with my oldest son at home!

  22. Thanks for sharing! I love this post. My husband and I are currently living in Savannah, GA due to his job (Army). Although the military lifestyle has been unpredictable & messy, I am so grateful for all the lovely friends (more like family) we have met throughout this journey and the places we’ve been able to go/see/ live. I am a homebody but this lifestyle has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I have now lived in NJ, Long Island, Washington State, Oklahoma, and now Georgia all within the 5 years we have been together. Such a whirlwind but it has taught me so much about myself. So funny that you mention you would like to own a coffee shop/bakery in your next life because I was just chatting with my Mom about how I would love to do that one day! I have truly enjoyed reading all of your fabulous and authentic posts and following your journey! I have recently started to explore the idea of launching my own blog. Thank you for being an inspiration!!

  23. Love your blog! Funny because I went to OSU and my husband went to MSU as well. We lived in Chicago for the past 8 years and just moved to Michigan to be closer to family. I think my kids are about the same age as yours as well – my son is 2 years and my daughter is 5 months. Small world!

  24. Loved this post learning a bit more about you- and love the sweater! I am also the oldest of three!
