What Makes You Happy?

Outfit details:
Old Navy Dress (wearing a small), Gucci Disco Bag, Ray Ban Sunglasses, Adidas Sneakers, Fresh Lip Color in Petal

What makes you happy? Like genuinely happy. I was thinking about this the other day as I vision my life getting more and more hectic in the coming months. Lately I’ve been feeling a little discouraged. Mostly by my to-do list which seems to get longer and never accomplished. I’m really struggling to prioritize as I constantly feel torn between focusing on growing my business and giving attention to my family and myself. It’s a battle I know that I’ll never win but it’s something that stresses me out.

So instead, I think about what makes me happy and it helps me to prioritize what is most important in my life. In no particular order:

  1. Reading and finishing a good book. Any recommendations? I need to update my library!
  2. Creating content and connecting with all of you.
  3. Date nights with Dave.
  4. Exercising.
  5. Cooking for my family.
  6. Watching Charlie explore and discover and learn for himself.
  7. Peace and quiet.
  8. Vacation.
  9. When Charlie says “mama.”
  10. Getting dressed up and feeling good about myself.

Some of these items may seems selfish but I have to take what I can get these days. As I start to plan for the remainder of the year – editorial calendars, holidays, weekend trips, goals, new schedules – it’s important for me to focus on the items above. It’s what keeps me motivated, keeps me sane and helps me to see clearly. Sometimes life gets so busy. I get mad when I have two hours to myself and I spend 45 minutes of it browsing social media.

Putting Charlie in day care two days a week has been really good for my sanity and I know it will relieve a little bit of stress once we have a new born. However, there is still so much to be done when it comes to my brand and the future of this business. I know I’ve initiated this process a few times but with a move and finally having help with Charlie, it feels like the right time. That being said, I’d really like to hire someone part time (20-25 hours per week) to help in the areas where I am slacking. Here is what I’m looking for:

Must have: Knowledge of Photoshop, WordPress and social media. Photography experience and understanding of Mailchimp is a plus. Must be kind, fun, creative, proactive, organized, flexible, diligent and patient 🙂 Must be based in Chicago/surrounding areas.

I will only be responding to SERIOUS inquiries. Please email me at liz@sequinsandstripes.com with “ASSISTANT” in the subject and include a link to your instagram/social media accounts, portfolio or resume. If you do not have the qualifications, I’m sorry but please don’t email me!

I love you all and appreciate your support so much. xoxo

  1. Love this list of things that make you happy- it encouraged me to think of the things that bring me happiness as well. I think it is great that you are looking to hire someone to help the site grow. If I were a little closer to Chicago I would definitely apply!

  2. Some book reccos for you 🙂 The Light We Lost, The Rumor, A Man Called Ove, The Dollhouse and Miss You!

  3. Good luck finding a good assistant Liz! I just finished The Light We Lost. It was a really quick read and really good! I’m reading My Brilliant Friend now and so far so good. It’s a four book series and they’re making it into an HBO series soon. Take care, you’re doing great!

  4. I think this is a great exercise — sometimes we have to indulge our emotions a little, right? In terms of good books I’ve read lately, I’d suggest “Life and Other Near-Death Experiences” for a fun, beachy read (summer can’t be over just yet!) or “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult if you’re looking for something a little more meaningful. Hope you get some time to finish up a few books before the baby comes!

  5. I just read “The Magnolia Story” and loved it! I went in to it with zero expectations and found it SO uplifting and inspiring. You should check it out!

  6. I am almost done listening to Castle of Water by Dane Huckelbridge and it is SO GOOD. Some of my other favorites this summer have been This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

  7. For book recommendations, I can’t recommend The Interestings enough!! It is such a great read – it follows 5 (6?) friends who meet at summer camp through their adult lives and how they are faced with different decisions/outcomes and how that affects their relationships with each other. I couldn’t put it down – I wish I hadn’t read it so I could read it fresh again, that’s how much I love it!!

And quick question from a past post – where did you get those fern salad plates from your entertaining at home post? I ordered the big plates and LOVE them and would love to do the same combo that you did!

  8. Loved this post Liz! I had to do the same recently and hitting reset to focus on those things is so important. We all admire how much you juggle as a mother and entrepreneur and I’m wishing you the best of luck in your assistant search! xo

  9. Hey Liz! I’ve been following along for years, and each time you write posts about who you truly are–aside from fashion blogging–I think more and more that we are so alike! A lot of the raw emotions you talk about I completely resonate with. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in those feelings, and that it’s completely ok to have such a normal balance of emotions! Who really is happy 100% of the time, and on the flip side, who is really upset 100% of their life? Have a great day, girl, and keep doing just what you are doing!
