Winter is a long season but I swear it feels a million times longer when you are stuck inside with kids. Everyone always asks me how I get out of the house with both boys and the truth is that I have to for my sanity. I think with baby #2 you know that they are going to be okay and I always tell myself the worst thing that can happen is a tantrum, a blowout, an outfit change – it’s all stuff that I can handle. The key is letting go of any expectations, trying not to stick to a schedule and just taking the day minute by minute (because it can all go south in a matter of seconds!).
Fresh air is good for the soul. Not only for myself but I know that Charlie especially calms down, wears out and just is generally happier when we get outside. Even if that means lots and lots of layers! I always had this mindset when we lived downtown, too. There are so many things you can do to get energy out during the colder months. Here are a few of our favorite ways to beat the winter blues:
Favorite Winter Activities with Kiddos
…in Chicago
Lincoln Park Zoo – lots of indoor exhibits!
Chicago Children’s Museum
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum – we love the butterfly room!
Music class – Mr. Dave and Tunes with Tim were our favorite
Chicago Public Library activities
Gymboree or My Gym classes
…in the suburbs
lots of days at the library
Westmont Yard – daily free play and Charlie plays soccer on Saturday mornings
LaGrange park district indoor playground
walks at Fullersburg Woods (pictured)
I’m always looking for suggestions on this to do in the suburbs! Please leave your favorites in the comments!
