Real Talk: Post Baby Body

post-baby-body-with-mustela1post-baby-body-with-mustela2post-baby-body-with-mustela5post-baby-body-with-mustela4post-baby-body-with-mustela6It has officially been 9 weeks since I had Charlie and I’m finally coming to terms with the fact that my body went through the ringer and bouncing back is harder than it appears! I think it is tough with social media these days, constantly reminding women that there are celebrities, models and just generally really skinny people who have the ability to bounce back from having a baby within weeks and I am not one of those people.

I loved being pregnant. I felt pretty awesome until the last few weeks. I ate relatively healthy, aside from my daily ice cream pint or bag of cheetos, and thought I did a good job of taking care of myself. Little did I know that my baby bump sure hid any damage that was happening to my muscles and skin! My poor stomach, I honestly can’t imagine it ever looking the same. My muscles ripped and it’s going to take a lot of barre classes to build that back up. Also you guys, I never said goodbye to my boobs. My beautiful, tiny, perky boobs. Those things are looooong gone. Replaced with swollen nipples, veins, and just enormous breasts. Seriously, it’s ridiculous. Dave told me I look like I should be on the cover of National Geographic. Thank you, milk!

I will say that the one thing I did a really good job of taking care of while I was pregnant was my skin. I had heard horror stories about stretch marks and wanted to ensure that it didn’t happen to me. I used three products throughout my pregnancy and am still using them today – Mustela Soothing Moisturizing Balm, Mustela Bust Firming Serum and Mustela Stretch Mark Prevention Oil. Thank the lord for these products because I am proud to say that my body is 100% stretch mark free! Here is why I loved them…

Soothing Moisturizing Balm: Your skin gets really dry when you’re pregnant and this stuff is like silk sheets to your skin. It smells amazing, sinks into the skin and lasts all day. I tried a lot of different lotions and honestly, this is the only lotion that didn’t make me feel like a hot mess when those lovely pregnancy hot flashes or sweat sessions kicked in. It kept my body cool and moisturized.

Bust Firming Serum: Thank the lord for this product! It is a cooling gel that I rubbed on my boobs every night and I still use it today when I get out of the shower (it is safe for breast feeding!). It kept my skin hydrated as my breasts grew and now it helps to soothe any swelling/pressure.

Stretch Mark Prevention Oil: Ive used this every night for the last 6 months, specifically on my stomach, hips, butt and thighs. It does exactly what it says it will and is ultra moisturizing for areas that have the most expansion while pregnant. Although it is an oil, it also absorbs super quickly and doesn’t leave your skin feeling slippery and wet. Just moisturized enough to prevent stretch marks from settling in!

To be completely honest, Mustela sent me their products originally and I’ve since re-purchased these three items, three times. They are great for anyone – pregnant or not! – and smell absolutely amazing (a plus for new mom’s because for some reason we start to sweat like men after having a baby, can anyone relate?). For any of you going through body changes, these products should be part of your daily routine.

Mustela is offering $5 off your purchase with code SEQUINS5 through 1/3!

Thank you Mustela for sponsoring this post!

  1. Don’t sweat it. It takes 9 months for your body to put on the weight so it’ll take timed or the weight to come off. Continue doing what you’re doing: eat right and exercise when you can.

  2. Oh my gosh the sweat…I was a sweaty mess for a few months…Glad to know it wasn’t just me! You look beautiful!

  3. Liz – you look great for just having a baby!!! I appreciate your honesty in this post. 🙂 Keep doing what you’re doing – I love your blog!

  4. I think I could use some of that moisturizing balm! My skin gets so dry in the winter and sometimes regular lotion just won’t cut it.

Side note: I love the honesty and transparency in your posts! Your blog is a joy to visit every single day!

  6. Looooove Mustela! It’s the only products I use and use on my son. I’m dealing with a post pregnancy body too. My poor stomach. 🙁

  7. You should look into the 4th Trimesters Body Project, it’s a really great photography project that celebrates a woman’s body after she gives birth!

  8. Liz,

I loved your post! It is all so true. I applaud you for being so candid and honest about all of it. Either way you look beautiful and Charlie is handsome as can be!

    Happy Holidays!

  9. It seems impossible, but your body WILL bounce back!! Naturally, as well as with some work. Be gentle with yourself. As time goes on and you start to get more rest, you’ll have less of the cortisol problem working against you, too. On another note, nursing hormones can do crazy things to your skin and hair, but that will get back to normal as well! The lower regions will return to normal, too. Don’t worry!

  10. Thank you for this post! I have been really loving your prenatal and postpartum posts, as I’m 24 weeks pregnant myself! This has always been one of my favorite blogs, as I’ve always found you to be so relatable and approachable, so again, thank you for your honesty and willingness to share your experience. I agree that social media can really take a toll on body image, especially during pregnancy. I find myself constantly worrying about my weight gain and the size of my bump, so I can imagine how it feels after the baby is born when you just want to get back to normal. You look fabulous and your little one is adorable!! Keep it up, and can’t wait to read more about your adventures as a new mom!

  11. Hang in there! I think it was about month five or six where I felt like I was starting to get my body back. I wore the belly binder a lot postpartum when I was just hanging around the house and most nights while I slept. I think that helped with the ab/stomach muscles I ripped.

And you’re so right about Mustela! I swear their products are the reason I didn’t get a stretch mark. I’m prone to them, so I worried about it a lot while I was pregnant. Slathering on their various potions was key.

It really comes down to how YOU feel about yourself, but I think you look just as fabulous as ever!! You’re doing a fantastic job!! xo

  12. Oh my goodness–it’s only been 9 weeks, don’t be hard on yourself! That baby was stretching you for 9 MONTHS! I have to say, you look incredible and so happy in your most recent pictures–it is evident you were taking such good care of yourself when you were pregnant.

  13. Thank you so much for sharing. I feel like we just sat down for a cup of coffee. As someone who is newly married and sees a baby on the horizon in a few years, it seems almost therapeutic to gradually prepare myself for what lies ahead. Also, I will be storing the product recommendations away!

  14. Love this post! We gave birth to our little guys just a few days apart! I followed your blog my whole pregnancy since our due dates were only a couple days apart 🙂 I wish I’d paid as much attention moisturizing my bum and thighs as much as I did my stomach! I have zero stretch marks on my stomach, but my thighs got the worst of it 🙁 I used some mustela products, but didn’t find them moisturizing enough. I didn’t see these! I used the belly balm from the honest company on my belly and it worked wonders! Now I’m looking for a product to help bring the elasticity back to my skin.
Tip for the breast! Always ALWAYS wear a bra! Only take it off while you shower. It helps support the weight of your boobs (no long boob syndrome!) and prevents them from getting engorged. As our little guys sleep longer, you may need to get up and pump. That’s what’s helped save my boobs from being painfully large! 🙂
All in all congratulations! You look amazing! 🙂
    Jessica

  15. I’m glad you did this post because it’s so hard to have a baby and deal with body post baby when Instagram is filled with the tiny pregnant women of the world. Kudos to them but my body just didn’t do that. And through the glitz and glamour of blogging this is the real life part of it all. Almost 18 months later and I’m back to my post baby weight but the shape and curve of my body isn’t the same. I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I baked a human for 9 months and this body is quite incredible even if it will never be the same…especially the boobs!

    Jamie // Hello There, Lady!

  16. I so hear you about body after baby…I am the same way! But I will tell you that you look amazing and I am so impressed that you are getting dressed and looking like a normal person! Ha! Don’t be too hard on yourself–I now look back on pictures of myself after I had Ethan and think, Damn, I looked better than I realized. And now after Wyatt, I have NO idea how I’ll get back there! Eh! Our bodies are amazing and produced these little human beings…I can’t complain! xx

  17. Thanks for this honest post. I just had a baby almost 6 weeks ago and have my lows when I look at my mush of a tummy and boobs that are uncomfortably too big for my petite frame. It is so hard to get back to our old body (and we may never get there and that’s ok!!). We will just work on getting healthy and doing the best we can!
I also agree with you that Mustela helped so much during the pregnancy.

  18. Love your blog! Unfortunately I tried a number of products throughout my recent pregnancy and STILL ended up with stretch marks. The creams, lotions etc. are great but it boils down to genetics, weight gain, the number of babies you are carrying and the elasticity in your skin.

  19. Oh, I know how you feel… I managed to avoid stretch marks. Came home from the hospital without them, feeling so proud. And then suddenly I got two! Post baby! How is that even possible?!

  20. I have a 16 year old and 14… Do not worry your body comes back but those previous days of pure innocence and bliss do not! Enjoy each and every day, for he is such a blessing and you are beautiful just the way you are!

On a different note… Love the mirror! Where is it from?

  21. Liz,
First off, I want to say how much I appreciate you for the honesty and beauty that you bring to each and every post, especially when it comes to your changing mind and body after having Charlie. I find that this type of honesty and genuine dialogue is a wonderful resource for many!

I too am from the Western Suburbs of Chicago! I grew up in La Grange, IL and worked in Hinsdale during my college summers, and I couldn’t agree with you more, Chicago is a beautiful place to live! I cannot say enough how much I appreciate your honesty in your body image, in that I am recovered from an eating disorder, and I host and write a blog on the beauty of eating disorder recovery, constant self care, living for life, and finding beauty within your new found self! Therefore, I commend you on you sharing your beautiful, and oh so real, journey with everyone!
