I worked at Nordstrom in high school (I think they only hired me so I would stop calling to ask about open positions, haha), and when I was there, everyone was really into the idea of a “third piece.” Essentially, your top and bottoms were the first and second piece of your outfit, and then you were supposed to add an extra element like a jacket, sweater, or scarf. At the time, I was very into putting a belt around everything, and though I’ve (thankfully) moved on from that trend, I still think about the “third piece” principle a lot.
More often than not, my third piece tends to be a denim jacket. Especially on days when I need to look put-together but not quite so polished, a denim jacket is the perfect thing to throw on top of a dress or a basic tee. I actually just got this jacket, and I’ve been wearing it at least three times a week—I’m obsessed with the wash and cut! Spring is absolutely the best season for denim jackets and I’m loving all the new styles I’ve been seeing lately, so I thought I would round up a few of my favorites:
You’ve probably seen Liz wearing this oversized jean jacket in this post. The slightly longer length is super flattering, and I love how it elevates even the most casual of outfits.
Fun details + denim are popping up all over the place. I love this embroidered denim jacket, the subtle daisy pattern on this jacket, and the cool-girl pearls on this Free People jacket.
Speaking of cool girls, what do you think? Could I pull off this millennial pink denim jacket? I’m thinking yes!
There’s a reason my girlfriends and I all have had some version of this J.Crew denim jacket in our closets since college. It’s the perfect wear-with-anything staple.
For a fun twist on a classic closet staple, I love the modern cut of this jacket, and this jacket has just the right amount of distressing.
This frayed-hem denim jacket is only $88—not bad considering you’ll be wearing it all summer.
Only a few more weeks until we can put away the heavy coats for good here in Chicago (fingers crossed!). What’s your favorite way to style a denim jacket?
Happy Saturday!
